Understanding Blood Sugar: A Path to Wellness
Empower Your Health with Balanced Blood Sugar
A three part series to explore the essential role of blood sugar in maintaining overall health and discover strategies to achieve balance and vitality.

Part 1: Why Blood Sugar Matters in Midlife and Beyond
Mastering Blood Sugar Management
If you're in midlife and beyond and feeling more tired, hungrier, more inflamed, or struggling with stubborn weight gain, your blood sugar may be playing a larger role than you realize.
As women move through perimenopause and menopause, shifting hormones can make it harder for our bodies to maintain healthy blood sugar balance.
Declining estrogen and progesterone can affect sleep, increase stress sensitivity, contribute to muscle loss, and make us less insulin sensitive.
The result?
More cravings, less energy, increased belly fat, and greater risk for metabolic health concerns over time.
And of course this applies to male bodies as well (just not about the estrogen).
The good news is that small, consistent habits can make a significant difference!

Why Blood Sugar Balance Matters in Menopause
Many women are surprised to learn that some of the symptoms they associate with menopause may actually be connected to blood sugar imbalances.
As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate and decline during perimenopause and menopause, our bodies often become less insulin sensitive. At the same time, sleep disturbances, increased stress, and age-related muscle loss can make blood sugar balance even more challenging.
The good news is that blood sugar balance is one of the most modifiable aspects of our health. Small changes to how we eat, sleep, move, and manage stress can create meaningful improvements in energy, mood, metabolism, and overall well-being.
When blood sugar is on a roller coaster, you may experience:
- Fatigue and afternoon energy crashes
- Increased cravings for sugar and carbohydrates
- Weight gain, particularly around the midsection
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
- Mood swings and irritability
- Poor sleep or waking in the middle of the night
- Increased inflammation
- Greater risk for prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease

TWO Easy Places to START!
1. Start Your Day with a Protein-Rich Breakfast
“Breaking the fast” is truly an opportunity to set the tone for your blood sugar for the rest of the day.
Many women begin the morning with toast, cereal, granola, muffins, or sugary coffee drinks that are high in carbohydrates and low in protein. This can create a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by an energy crash and cravings later in the day.
Instead, aim for 15–30 grams of protein at breakfast, along with some healthy fat and little to no added sugar.
Some nourishing options include:
- Eggs with avocado and vegetables
- Homemade turkey sausages or meatballs
- A smoothie made with a quality protein powder (collagen, egg white, pea protein, or a protein blend)
- Tofu or tempeh scramble
- Bone broth alongside breakfast
- Leftover protein and vegetables from dinner
A balanced breakfast can help improve satiety, stabilize energy, and reduce cravings throughout the day.
2. Move Your Body!
Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have for blood sugar balance.
When muscles contract, they pull glucose out of the bloodstream and use it for energy. Regular movement can improve insulin sensitivity, support healthy weight management, and boost mood and energy.
Do what works best for your body:
- Walking after meals
- Strength training two to three times per week
- Gardening
- Hiking
- Dancing
- Yoga or Pilates
- Any movement you enjoy and can do consistently
Remember, consistency matters more than perfection.
